Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik (ZLT)
Pushing the boundries of airship use – in focus
Research and developement in the tradition of Count Zeppelin, establishing the future of airships.
The ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co KG (ZLT), based in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, was established in September 1993 under the name ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH. The purpose of the company is the development, manufacture and sale of airships of the Zeppelin NT (New Technology) brand.
The network of companies founded more than a century ago by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin (1838–1917), prior to the development and manufacture of dirigibles, are still around today. From the „Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH“ which was founded in 1908, evolved over the years the global industrial enterprises „Zeppelin GmbH“ and „ZF Friedrichshafen AG“. The majority shareholders of ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co KG are ZF with 49 % and Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH with 51 %.
With the new design principle based on a rigid internal structure, an innovative drive concept with swiveling propellers and a "fly-by-wire” flight control system ZLT extended the application limits of previous airships significantly. With the airship’s maneuverability the typically labor-intensive Ground Handling could be drastically reduced. In 2001, with the issue of the Zeppelin NT Type Certificate and the approval of ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH as an aircraft manufacturer by the Luftfahrtbundesamt (German CAA), important prerequisites for the future of airship building in Friedrichshafen were fulfilled.
